Roy Sanders (Retired December 2006)
Professor
Roy Sanders graduated from London University in 1962, trained for
five years in the generality of surgery before embarking upon a
seven year training in plastic surgery. He was appointed a Consultant
and Senior Lecturer in the University of London in Plastic Surgery
in 1974 and became Clinical Director of the Mount Vernon Centre
for Plastic Surgery in 1980 where he engaged in the whole spectrum
of reconstructive plastic surgery but with a particular interest
in the reconstruction of patients suffering cleft lip and palate
deformity, head and neck cancer and burns.
In 1990 he established the RAFT Centre for Reconstructive Plastic
Surgery Research of which he became the Research Director.
Professor Sanders has been Secretary to The British Association
of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, Secretary and later President of
The British Association of Plastic Surgeons and a Member of the
Senate of The Royal Surgical Colleges of Great Britain & Ireland.
In the education field he has been Chairman of the Specialist Advisory
Committee in Higher Surgical Training in Plastic Surgery.
In the research field he has produced many papers on surgery, cell
and molecular biology, lasers etc.
He was appointed an Honorary Professor of University College London
on retirement from the National Health Service in 1993.
Prof Sanders works within a team of surgeons, specialist plastic
surgery nurses, personal assistants and receptionists in his private
practice, at The Consulting Suite, in central London.
